Worked example: a 10 lb (4.5 kg) queen. RER = 70 x 4.5^0.75 = about 157 kcal. In late pregnancy the factor is about 2.0x, so MER = about 314 kcal/day on a growth-formula diet. At peak lactation with a 5-kitten litter, add roughly 0.25x RER per kitten: 5 x 0.25 x 157 = about 196 extra kcal, for a total near 510 kcal/day -- over 3x maintenance. That is why free-choice feeding suits a nursing queen. As the kittens start solid food at 3-4 weeks and nurse less, her need falls back toward 200-250 kcal, then to maintenance after weaning. Weigh the queen weekly; she should not lose excessive condition during lactation. Taper food gradually over 1-2 weeks post-weaning to avoid rapid swings. One more practical note: the queen's water intake matters as much as her food during lactation, so refresh water often and consider a fountain. If she guards food, eats litter, or seems lethargic, that can signal a problem and warrants attention. After weaning, return her to a normal adult maintenance target and monitor her weight as she recovers her pre-breeding condition over the following weeks. Before breeding, aim to have the queen at a healthy lean body condition rather than under- or overweight, since both raise the risk of small or weak litters and delivery complications. Early in pregnancy (weeks 1-4) the multiplier is only about 1.4x RER -- for our 10 lb queen that is roughly 220 kcal/day, only modestly above maintenance -- so the big calorie jump comes later, not at the start. Spreading the increase gradually across gestation matches the kittens' growth curve better than a sudden step-up, and it is easier on the queen's appetite and digestion. In late pregnancy, many owners switch from scheduled meals to ad libitum feeding because the kittens compress the queen's stomach and she cannot comfortably eat a large meal at once. Offer small, frequent portions and let her appetite guide intake within the calculated range.
A dangerous myth is that a pregnant cat should be fed like an adult and 'eat for two' only at the end; energy needs rise steadily through pregnancy and explode in lactation, so a growth-formula diet should start early. Another is that low-calorie 'light' food is fine for a queen -- it is not, during this demanding period. And that kittens weaning means mom can instantly return to normal portions; tapering gradually avoids mastitis and weight crashes.
